Golfer’s Elbow Massage
MASSAGE MARBELLA BY SUSAN
Epitrocleitis, also known as golfer’s elbow, is an inflammation of the insertion of the epitrochlear muscles. The pain of this injury appears on the inside of the elbow with certain movements and with palpation. Physiotherapeutic treatment is required to alleviate this pain.
Golfer’s elbow occurs when the elbow is frequently and continuously hyper-flexed. In other words, it is stretched beyond the normal limit in an exaggerated manner.
This movement causes micro-tears in the wrist flexor muscles, which run from the wrist to the inside of the elbow. Specifically, the golfer, when swinging, brings the muscles to this position.
Golfer’s elbow or medial epicondylitis is less common than tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis. It mostly affects people between the ages of 45 and 65, and is more common in women than in men.
Symptoms and diagnosis of golfer’s elbow
The main symptom that characterises this disorder is a pain that appears on the inside of the elbow and is directed towards the part of the wrist closest to the little finger.
Pain also occurs when the wrist is flexed inwards, when holding an object, when shaking hands or when pressing on the inside of the elbow.
Numbness or tingling may also be felt from the elbow to the little finger and even the ring finger.
Diagnosis of golfer’s elbow is simple, it can be detected with an examination.

Treatment of golfer’s elbow is based on relieving the pain, reducing the inflammation and regaining full mobility of the muscles. To do this, the main recommendation is to temporaily stop the activity that caused the injury.
In general, the treatment is based on:
- Unloading massage of the epicondyle and epitrochlear muscles, for which we can perform kneading massage and neuromuscular passes in the area.
- Deep transverse massage or cyriax type massage, in order to achieve the correct reorganisation of the fibres.
- Muscle strengthening, after the period of inflammation it is common for the muscles to be weak, it is important to achieve an acceptable degree of strength, especially through eccentric contractions.
